Aditi said to her father, “Baba, look at this tree. There are so many nests in which birds are living. It also has a big hive, with number of bees.” Farmer replied, “It is of no use. It doesn’t bear any fruit. We must cut it down.”
Next day the farmer decided to cut the tree. He started using his axe. Aditi was upset, she didn’t want the tree to be cut. Suddenly a bird pleaded, “Please don’t cut this tree. If you cut it down, we will have no shelter.” The farmer replied, “I am sorry, I can’t help you. It will be better if you leave this tree.” He continued to cut the tree. Aditi could not bear it. 1.6 Attentive AntTap to collapse / expand
I’m one of the tiniest but busiest creatures on the Earth. An ant!
Yes, you’ve seen me marching in a line with my friends, carrying food or tiny pieces of leaves. I live together with my big family called a colony. We all have our own special jobs. Some ants build underground homes with many rooms and tunnels. Other ants build colonies inside trees, leaves or even walls. Our colony has a queen, who lays all the eggs. She’s the mother of us. Then there are males, who help to start new colonies. There are workers like me; who clean the nest, find food, take care of the babies and protect everyone. The three parts of my body are a head, a thorax and an abdomen. I walk on six legs. My antennae helps me to smell, touch and talk to other ants. I breathe through tiny holes in my body called spiracles.
Amazing, isn’t it? I can carry things that are twenty times heavier than myself. Imagine if you could lift a car that much strong I am!We talk to each other using special smells called pheromones. We always help each other. If you step near our anthill, touch them, or disturb our line, we feel we are in danger. We bite with our strong jaws and sting and release formic acid, which causes a burning or itching feeling. We defend ourselves and run, when scared just like you.

You have been using me for so long!""I am feeling overheated and drained. I am tired now", said Moby. Pihu laughed and said, "Can a mobile really get tired?" Moby replied, "Yes! I help you talk to friends, learn new things, send messages and watch videos. But too much use is not good for me and you.""Too much screen time can damage your eyes and health," said Moby seriously. "You should play outside, read books and sleep on time." Pihu felt sorry. She quickly found the charger and plugged in the mobile and said, "I promise you. I will use you wisely." The Ajanta Caves are situated in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra. They are one of the finest examples of ancient Buddhist art and architecture in India. The caves were carved between the 2nd century BCE and the 6th century CE. They were used as monasteries and prayer halls by Buddhist monks. Q. What diseases are caused by flies and mosquitoes?
Flies and mosquitoes spread diseases such as malaria, dengue, typhoid, cholera and diarrhoea.
The people and animals were falling sick because there was stagnant water, garbage on the roads, and people were washing clothes and animals in the river. Flies and mosquitoes spread diseases in the village.
I learned that we should keep our surroundings clean. We should separate wet and dry waste, avoid littering and keep water sources clean to stay healthy.

|---|---|---|
| Fruit peels | Plastic bottle | Broken wire |
| Banana peels | Plastic bag | Electronic waste |
| Vegetable waste | Paper cup | |
| Egg shells | Tin can |
Yes, I keep wet and dry garbage separate at home. Wet waste is collected in one bin, while dry waste such as paper and plastic is collected in another bin.
Mosquitoes will breed in stagnant water and spread diseases such as malaria and dengue.
The surroundings will become dirty, attract flies and spread diseases.
Spitting on the road spreads germs, makes the surroundings dirty and causes diseases.
The water will become polluted and unsafe for drinking. It can cause illness to both people and animals.
Good Morning everyone,
Cleanliness is very important for a healthy life. If we keep our home, school and surroundings clean, we can stay away from many diseases. We should never throw garbage on the road. We must separate wet and dry waste and keep our rivers and wells clean. Clean surroundings make our village, city and country beautiful.

Let us all join the cleanliness campaign and make our country clean and healthy.
Thank You.

6. Water AwarenessTap to collapse / expand
There was once a severe shortage of water in Latur. At that time, the Government supplied drinking water to the city through water trains.
I save water by:
Turning off the tap while brushing.
Using only the required amount of water.
Reusing water for watering plants.
Repairing leaking taps.
Avoiding wastage of water.
Rainwater falls on:
Roofs of houses
Roads
Hill slopes
Ground
We can save water by collecting rainwater in tanks and allowing it to seep into the ground through soak pits. This helps increase the groundwater level.
Vanarai was established by Mohan Dharia.
Vanarai Bunds are small check dams built across streams and drains. They slow down the flow of water and allow it to seep into the ground, helping to increase the groundwater level.
Sources of drinking water are limited.
Rainfall is not the same everywhere.
The demand for water is increasing because of the growing population.
Water should be used carefully.
Water sources should be kept clean to prevent pollution.
Wastewater is collected and purified for reuse in Jakatwadi village of Satara district.
The treated water is used for:
Fruit orchards
Backyard gardens
Maintaining cleanliness
Used water can be reused for:
Watering plants
Cleaning floors
Washing vehicles
Maintaining gardens
Use only the required amount of water.
Turn off taps after use.
Repair leaking taps immediately.
Collect rainwater whenever possible.
Do not waste clean drinking water.
Water purification is the process of making water clean and safe for drinking and other uses. Purified water helps protect us from diseases caused by polluted water.
Water pollution is caused by:
Throwing garbage into rivers and lakes.
Releasing sewage into water bodies.
Industrial waste.
Washing clothes and animals in rivers.
Plastic waste and chemicals.
Water can be purified by:
Boiling
Filtering
Chlorination
Using water purifiers (RO/UV)
Sedimentation and filtration at water treatment plants
Water Conservation Day is celebrated on 10th May in Maharashtra.
Dams are built to store water for drinking, farming, industries and generating electricity.
Latur faced a severe water shortage due to drought, so drinking water had to be supplied by trains.
He made water arrangements to ensure that people and soldiers at Raigad Fort had enough water throughout the year.
Rajendra Singh built Johads (small earthen dams) to store rainwater and solve the problem of water scarcity in Rajasthan.
To reduce water pollution:
Do not throw garbage into rivers and lakes.
Treat sewage before releasing it.
Avoid using harmful chemicals near water bodies.
Keep water sources clean.
Spread awareness about saving water.
Dr. Rajendra Singh is called the "Waterman of India" because he built Johads (small earthen dams) to store rainwater. His work increased groundwater levels and turned many dry areas into green and fertile land.

11. Protection of the Environment – My ResponsibilityTap to collapse / expand
Our environment gives us clean air, water, food, and shelter. It is our duty to keep our surroundings clean, plant more trees, and protect nature. This chapter teaches students the importance of cleanliness, environmental protection, and caring for trees.
Everyone happily started walking on the footpath because the Principal explained that cleanliness and following rules help keep us healthy and our surroundings clean.
Cleanliness means keeping our body, home, school, and surroundings neat and clean. We should follow cleanliness to stay healthy, prevent diseases, and keep the environment clean.
If we do not keep our body clean regularly, we may fall sick, get infections, and spread diseases.
Garbage and bad smell can spread diseases, attract flies and mosquitoes, and make the environment dirty.
We, along with cleanliness workers and municipal workers, help keep our home, school, village, and city clean.
Cleanliness has always been important. Mahatma Gandhi encouraged people to keep themselves and their surroundings clean. The tradition of cleanliness in India is very old.
Correct Order
Picture 3 – Students clean the school surroundings.
Picture 1 – The Principal explains the importance of cleanliness.
Thousands of years ago, ancient cities like Harappa and Mohenjo-daro had well-planned roads, drainage systems, and public bathrooms. This shows that cleanliness has been important in India since ancient times.
Evergreen trees like Neem, Banyan, Peepal, Mango, and Coconut remain green throughout the year.
Without trees, we would not get enough oxygen. Pollution would increase, rainfall would decrease, animals would lose their homes, and the Earth would become hotter.
Trees give us oxygen, fruits, flowers, shade, wood, medicines, and clean air. They also help bring rain and provide shelter to birds and animals.
We give trees water, manure, care, and protection so that they grow healthy and strong.
The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is celebrated on 2nd October.

This chapter teaches us the importance of national unity, respect for our national symbols, and pride in our country. Every citizen should respect the National Flag, National Anthem, and the rich cultural heritage of India, making our country strong and united.

Good communication helps us become confident, responsible, and kind citizens. This chapter teaches students the importance of listening carefully, speaking politely, respecting others, helping people, and working together.
In the picture, students and teachers are standing in the school ground. The Indian National Flag is being hoisted on a flagpole. Everyone is saluting the National Flag with respect. The school building can also be seen in the background. It looks like an Independence Day or Republic Day celebration.
The National Flag is hoisted in our school on:
Independence Day (15th August)
Republic Day (26th January)
Maharashtra Day (1st May)
It is also hoisted on other important national celebrations.
Before the flag hoisting ceremony, we:
Clean and decorate the school.
Make rangoli and decorate with flowers.
Arrange chairs for guests.
Wear neat school uniforms.
Practice parade, patriotic songs, and speeches.
Arrange the microphone and sound system.
The ₹10 note has a picture of the Sun Temple at Konark on the back side. The front side has a picture of Mahatma Gandhi and the Ashoka Pillar. The Konark Sun Temple is an important symbol of India's rich cultural heritage.
We should always:
Listen carefully.
Speak politely and clearly.
Respect the opinions of others.
Work together with everyone.
The State Song of Maharashtra is "Jai Jai Maharashtra Majha."
Some common patriotic slogans are:
Bharat Mata Ki Jai
Jai Hind
Vande Mataram
Inquilab Zindabad
I will visit my friend, ask about his or her health, help with schoolwork, and wish for a speedy recovery.
I will carefully help her cross the road safely after checking for traffic.
I will politely explain that too much mobile use is not good for health and encourage spending time reading, talking, or playing.
The story teaches us that Unity is Strength. When we help one another and work together, we can solve even difficult problems.
I will speak clearly, politely, and listen to others respectfully.
I will listen carefully, respect their advice, and follow it sincerely.
I will stand straight, remain silent, and sing the National Anthem with respect.
I will throw them only in the dustbin and keep my surroundings clean.
I will help them politely, respect them, and treat them equally.
This is not a good habit. We should always throw garbage into the correct dustbin to keep our surroundings clean.
Planting trees is a good habit. Trees provide oxygen, fruits, shade, and help keep the environment green.
Helping others is a good habit. We should always support differently-abled people and treat everyone with kindness and respect.

Listening carefully, speaking politely, respecting others, and helping people are important values in life. By working together, keeping our surroundings clean, and showing kindness to everyone, we become responsible citizens and help build a better society.
